How to play tennis correctly — this question is interesting for beginners who are only taking the first steps in this sport. The game should be distinguished from other similar activities. First of all, one should not confuse it with badminton.
Lawn tennis rules
The rules of the game are not subject to change and are formulated very clearly. The game process is divided into a number of stages, each of which passes by its own rules:
Serve. Every game starts with a serve, and the right to serve passes alternately from one player to another after the end of the game. The player must be behind the back line and not cross it.
Otherwise, sanctions may be applied. When making a pitch, the player must throw the ball diagonally, not directly, to the opposite half of the field, and the first time the pitcher must be on the right side. At the end of the draw, you must move to the opposite side of the center line.
At the same time, the player has the right to re-serve if the first time the ball hit the net or went over the line. However, if the mistake is repeated, the opponent is awarded a point. Another common violation is finding a player behind the back line. In this case, a point can also be awarded to the opponent.
Game. At the beginning of each game, the score is 0:0. The pitcher can win the serve and thus earn 15 points. They can also lose, and in this case 15 points goes to their opponent. Then the score can be 30 and 40. Then the draw can give one of the professionals a victory. However, this only happens if the opponent has 30 points or less. If both players have 40 points, winning the next point gives them an advantage. Finally, the game can be won by the player who has the advantage and wins the next ball.
Set. This is a series of games. As soon as one of the players wins six games, regardless of whether it is done in a row or not, a set is counted in their favor. If the score becomes 6: 5, an additional game is played. When the score is 7: 5, the winner is determined, and the set win is counted. If the score is 6: 6, a special tie-break is played.
Match. The match consists of a series of sets. A three-set or five-set match is allowed. In the first case, you need to win two sets to win, and in the second three will grant you victory.
The tie-break. The tiebreak has no time limit. It will last exactly as long as it is necessary for all the game conditions to be met. The right to serve passes to the opponent after the first ball, and the second time it passes after two innings. Alternation is maintained throughout the tiebreak. To win, you must score at least seven points, but the difference must be at least two points. If this does not happen, the game will continue indefinitely. The last set in lawn tennis is played without a tiebreak.
Tennis players play on a specially equipped court
It is not allowed to change the size, coverage or other characteristics, except for those that are explicitly stated in the rules of the game.
Geographically, tennis court is a rectangular area. At the same time, there must be a marking and a flat surface is guaranteed throughout the court. The length of the court is 23.77 meters, the width varies from 8.23 meters to 10.97 meters. The difference is due to the type of game. The first type of court is used for singles, the second is used for doubles.
There is a net in the middle of the court. Without fail, it must be stretched across the entire court exactly in the middle.
Mark-up is also present. In particular, the back lines are markings along the short sides of the court that are behind the player, and the side lines are dividing lines that stretch along the wide sides of the court.
