The ITF has informed the Pakistan Tennis Federation and the Philippine Tennis Association that, due to security concerns, Pakistan will lose choice of ground for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group II semifinal tie between the two nations on 10-12 July.

The Davis Cup Committee voted to reverse choice of ground for this tie and award it to the Philippines, based upon existing advice from the ITF’s security consultants.

In accordance with the Davis Cup regulations, Pakistan will have choice of ground on the next occasion that the two nations meet. Pakistan also lost choice of ground for its first round tie against Oman, which was played in Oman. The Pakistan Tennis Federation has the right to appeal this decision to the ITF Board of Directors.

ASIA/OCEANIA GROUP II

Philippines overcame a spirited challenge from Hong Kong China, which almost forced a decisive rubber, as it made a successful start to its Group II campaign following relegation from Group I last year.

Philippines is now due to travel to face a rejuvenated Pakistan side, which comfortably saw off Oman to record its sixth victory in a row after promotion from Group III last year. Prior to last year Pakistan had lost six successive ties as it went from the World Group play-offs to Group III in three years.

Last year’s defeated finalist New Zealand also wasted little time in advancing, eliminating the other promoted side Malaysia, to earn a home semifinal against Indonesia, which was taken to a deciding rubber before finally overcoming Kuwait.

In July’s relegation play-offs, Hong Kong China will face Oman and Kuwait will travel to Malaysia. The losing nation in both of those matches will be relegated to Group III for 2010
